3490 Enterprise Tape
Description of 3490 Enterprise Tape
An Improved Data Recording Capability format of 3480 tapes commonly known as 3490 enterprise tape format introduced by the IBM in 1986 provide data storage capacity of up to 400 MB on single tape and have same media and tracks as uses by the 3480 tapes. 3490 tapes can read and write standard 3480 tapes that compress the data before writing it to the tape. The 3490E tape format of enterprise tapes was introduced by IBM in 1991 that provide almost double data storage capacity of 800 MB native at higher data transfer speed of 20 MB/s as compared with standard 3490 tape formats and recorded 36 tracks across the tape by using longer 1100 foot media. Nevertheless, few of the 3480 tape drives can be recorded on 3940E media but most of the tape drives can only read/write 36 track tapes and only some of them are available to read and write tapes recorded by the 3480 tape drives. Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) of 3490E tapes allow it to provide data storage capacity of up to 2400 MB by using same 36 tracks on single extended tape.
